Essay Assignment

FINAL PROJECT

A formal five paragraph essay will be the final project.

Pick your topic by Tuesday 25th

A first draft is due Monday 31th or Tuesday 1st, depending on when you have long block.

The final draft is due Friday, April 11th, for all classes.

Throughout these three weeks we will be discussing literary terms. The essay will be a reflection of that.

WRITING THE ESSAY

A. Choose a topic

1. Why is the tree Melinda creates in Art class important?
2. Character analysis of Melinda
3. Discuss five literary terms and use Speak to demonstrate examples of each.
4. Why does Melinda call Art class Sanctuary?
   
5. CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENT: Write an essay in which you discuss imagery and symbolism in Speak. [Picking 1-2 images/symbols will make your essay stronger than if you pick 4+]
6. Topic of choice – this must be approved by Mr. Pirkl first!

B. Write Body Paragraphs [Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4]

Requirements for each Paragraph:

• Topic Sentence
• 2-3 items of support from the book
• A total of at least 5 sentences

C. Write Introduction and Conclusion

Requirements for Introduction:

• A total of at least 5 sentences
• Hook – Provide information that will get the readers attention
  • Here are some suggestions for a hook:
  • • Making a controversial statement
  • • Asking a question or questions
  • • Having an interesting quote
• The paragraph must end with a thesis statement

Requirements for Conclusion:

• A total of at least 5 sentences
• The paragraph must start with a restating of the thesis
• Draw conclusions
• Suggest something for the reader to think about relevant to the thesis statement.
